Milos: A Hidden Gem in the Aegean

 

Oh Milos, Milos, Milos you have stolen our hearts...About 5 years ago, we learned about this incredible island and that you can stay in Syrmat, traditional boat houses/fisherman huts right on the water, instantly became a bucket list must do! It was everything we dreamed of and more (despite the steady & frankly hilarious flow of instagrammers striking poses all around us). We really made the most out of our time here, we swam, played music, cooked, relaxed, had happy hours at sunset and got some serious hammock time (even got a few early morning yoga poses happening and a bit of work done).

 

Welcome to Milos, a truly captivating island located in the Cyclades archipelago of Greece. With its dramatic landscapes, pristine beaches, and chilled vibe, Milos is a favourite for travelers seeking tranquility, stunning scenery, and authentic Greek hospitality. It is somewhat quieter than its more famous cycladic neighbours, but there is something for everyone, including the night owls. So jump in...adventure awaits!

Must-See Attractions:

We aren't going to bang on about the gorgeous beaches you can visit (not the picturesque Firopotamos, the sandy shores of Provatos, the impressive Papafragas or the remote and dramatic Tsigardo Beach), the jaw dropping sunsets you will witness, or the amazing food you can eat at the seaside tavernas and restaurants, or the clubs & bars for when you're looking for a bit of nightlife excitement (especially we wont be mentioning the Buddha Bar, Plori or Akri). These (and so much more) you can have fun finding and exploring yourselves, below though, are a few highlights that you wont want to miss!

  1. Sarakiniko Beach:

This place is truly amazing, staggered with white rock formations creating a moonscape that is truly impressive, an almost alien landscape. What happens when blinding white rocks meet crystal clear, azure waters? You’ve got yourself a jaw dropping place to go cliff jumping, take an early morning swim and explore the coastline and caves both above and below the water. This lunar landscape is spectacular!
    Pro Tip: Get there early to avoid the crowds. We were so lucky to have the place largely to ourselves for a few hours and it was magical.


       

      1. Klima & Firopotamos:

      Discover the gorgeous fishing villages of Milos such as Klima & Firopotamos, which are renowned for their charming, traditional boathouses carved into the cliffs. Wander along the colorful waterfront, admiring the traditional Cycladic architecture and taking in picture-perfect views of the turquoise sea.
        • Kleftiko:

        Book a boat excursion to Kleftiko, a remote coastal area accessible only by sea. Marvel at the towering sea caves, hidden coves, and sculpted volcanic rock formations that dominate this amazing scenery.


          • Sunset at Kastro

            Explore the Gorgeous Hilltop town of Plaka with it's winding streets and Cycladic Architecture. Time seems to slow with Ya-yas strolling arm in arm through the narrow streets, going about their day. Afterwards head to the remnants of the old Venetian Castles to watch the most amazing sunset over the Gulf of Milos. 

            • Ancient Theater of Milos & Catacombs:
            Step back in time at the Ancient Theater of Tripiti, an archaeological site dating back to the Hellenistic period. Wander through the ruins of this ancient amphitheater, which once hosted performances and cultural events against a backdrop of the ocean. For the adventurous (and brave), while visiting Tripiti you can also checkout the Catacombs, an ancient complex series of tunnels and death chambers...

              Milos is pretty laid back and chilled in comparison to its more famous counterparts like Santorini and Mykonos althogh, as in much of the Meditteranean, classic styles, breatheable and cooling natural fibres are where it's at.               Transport Links and Travel Tips:

              • Arriving by Ferry: Milos is easily accessible by ferry from Athens' Piraeus port, with regular connections available throughout the year. Ferry services also connect Milos to other nearby islands in the Cyclades, offering convenient options for island hopping. We used Sea Jets Fast Ferries to start our Island adventure as quickly as possible!

              • Getting Around: Renting a car or scooter is the most convenient way to explore Milos and access its remote beaches and attractions. Alternatively, public buses operate between the main towns and villages, providing affordable transportation for travelers without a vehicle. The Ferry arrives in Adamos and here you will find a few different car rental agencies plus  chauffeur rides for those that don't wish to drive themselves.

              Pro Tip: Book your car early to secure as there a only a limited amount of rentals available. Also some car rental agencies close between 1pm and 5pm so be sure to check with your provider and check your ferry arrival times. If you do need to wait for them to reopen there's plenty of things to do/places to eat in and around town.
              • Accommodation: Milos offers a diverse range of accommodation options, from boutique hotels, traditional guesthouses, and beachfront villas to charming renovated Boathouses. Choose a seaside retreat in Adamas or Pollonia for easy access to amenities and stunning coastal views or opt for a unique stay in one of the traditional fisherman villages.

              We Chose to spend our final night in the gorgeous laid back port town of Adamas, as we were heading to Santorini the next day.
